AquaBiomics is closing. Here's what your tests can still tell you.
The only accessible DNA sequencing service for home reef tanks shuts down at the end of the summer. That leaves chemistry testing carrying the whole load, so it's worth being precise about what it covers, what it never covered, and how to watch the biology anyway.
In July 2026, AquaBiomics announced it will permanently cease operations by the end of the summer. Founded by coral biologist Dr. Eli Meyer, it was the only service that let a home reefer send in a water sample and a swab and get back a DNA-level picture of the bacterial community actually running their tank. Thousands of samples later, that window is closing.
Two deadlines matter if you're a customer. Water and swab samples must arrive at the lab by August 15, 2026 to be analyzed. Kits returned after that date will not be processed. Final sales of Live Reef Sand and Live Rubble end August 31, 2026, and that's the close of the business.
By Dr. Meyer's own account, the technology worked and the science was sound. What failed was the economics: high-throughput sequencing carries heavy reagent and equipment costs, the market of reefers willing to pay for genomic testing is small, and holding consumer prices down while maintaining scientific rigor didn't scale. It's worth sitting with that for a minute, because there's a lesson in it for how this hobby buys data.
What microbiome testing did that nothing else does
Every reef tank runs on two layers. The layer you can see and measure: corals, fish, alkalinity, calcium, nitrate. And the layer underneath: the bacterial community cycling nitrogen, competing with pests, processing organics, and colonizing every surface in the system. AquaBiomics read that second layer directly, profiling beneficial bacterial families, flagging parasites that hitchhiked in on a frag, and comparing your tank's microbial diversity against a database of healthy systems.
No chemistry test does this. An ICP report can tell you your aluminum is 11 times over the reference range. It cannot tell you whether your nitrifying bacteria took a hit after that antibiotic course, or whether the "mystery pest" on your acros left DNA in the water column. Those were sequencing questions, and as of this month, the hobby has nowhere accessible to ask them.
That's a real loss, and it deserves to be named as one. Dr. Meyer's lab proved that microbial diversity belongs in the same conversation as alkalinity and calcium when we talk about coral health.
Why it closed, honestly
The economics explanation is true, but there's a harder truth sitting next to it, one the community discussion has been candid about: the service struggled with turnaround delays, and many customers finished reading their beautiful, scientifically rigorous report without knowing what to actually do next. Data without a decision attached is a luxury purchase, and luxury purchases have small markets.
That's not a criticism of the science. It's a lesson about what reefers will pay for repeatedly. A number is worth something once, out of curiosity. A number attached to a plan, do this, in this order, for this reason, is worth something every time your tank changes. The services that survive in this hobby are the ones that close that loop.
What ICP can tell you, and where it stops
With sequencing gone, ICP testing is the deepest look inside your tank you can still buy. It's genuinely deep: forty-plus elements, contaminants your hobby kits will never see, drift you'd otherwise catch months late. But be precise about the boundary. ICP measures what's dissolved in the water at the moment you drew the sample. It doesn't measure the biology consuming and producing those numbers, a gap we've written about before in why identical ICP results can mean two different tanks. Losing microbiome testing doesn't move that boundary. It just means nobody is watching the far side of it directly anymore.
How to keep reading the biology anyway
The microbial layer is invisible now, but it isn't silent. It leaves fingerprints on everything you can still measure. Four proxies worth watching:
- Nutrient stability between tests. A mature, diverse microbial community processes nitrogen and phosphorus predictably. If nitrate and phosphate start wandering with no change in feeding or export, the biology underneath shifted first.
- Alkalinity demand you can't explain. Consumption that rises or falls without a matching change in coral growth is often biological before it's chemical. Track the dose it takes to hold your number, not just the number.
- Who wins the open real estate. Cyanobacteria films, dinoflagellate outbreaks, and bacterial blooms are visible symptoms of an invisible competition. A tank that keeps losing surfaces to pests is telling you its beneficial community is thin.
- Coral tissue and behavior. Polyp extension, tissue condition, and mucus production respond to microbial water quality faster than any test you'll run. Your eyes are the one biological sensor that didn't shut down this summer.
And protect the community you can't see: skip prophylactic antibiotics, quarantine instead of medicating the display, feed varied foods, and think twice before nuking every film of algae with a chemical.
